Making a Component Mandatory within a Component Profile

Previous page  First page  Next page

You can make specific components appear on your customers' blogs using component profiles that contain mandatory components.  If a component in the assigned component profile is mandatory, your customers will not be able to remove it from their blogs' layouts. They may change its position on the page, but they cannot disable it.

In order to make a component mandatory, you must create or edit a component profile and designate components as mandatory within that profile. Any existing blogs as well as subsequent blogs that use the component profile will display the mandatory components. It can be useful to have two similar component profiles, one which contains mandatory components, and another where the components are not mandatory.

Changes to component profiles are processed asynchronously, and will take effect on end-users' blogs using that profile within one hour.

The default position of mandatory components in the component profile layout is:

If three-column layout chosen for component profile, mandatory components default to the right column (and can be moved to the left column)
If two-column layout chosen for component profile, mandatory components default to the right column (and can be moved to the left column)
If single-column layout chosen for component profile, mandatory components default to the footer

To mark a component as mandatory

Components can be made mandatory from either the Add Component Profile or Edit Component Profile page.

To get to the Add Component Profile page: click the Component Profiles tab, then click the Add Component Profile link.

To get to the Edit Component Profile page: click the Component Profiles tab, then click the Edit link beside the component profile.

1.From the Add Component Profile or Edit Component Profile page, choose an option from the drop-down list in the Mandatory column for the components that you want to make mandatory. The mandatory component will appear in the header if you choose Header, footer if you choose Footer, and in the right column if you choose Column (you can move the component to the left column later).

2.Click the Layout Components button. The Profile Layout page opens. If required, use the Profile Layout page to customize the page for the component profile.

3.Click the Save Layout button when done.
